CNB and Our Partners Honor the Military Through ‘Steaks for Troops’ program Country Natural Beef is not only committed to ensuring the sustainable relationship between ranchers‚ their customers and the land‚ but also to honoring the people who protect this country. Starting in 2009‚ CNB has participated in the Steaks for Troops program‚ a program developed by the All–American Beef Battalion (AABB) to show appreciation and support for members of the U.S. military and their families. At each of the events‚ which have been held across the country‚ the troops and their families are invited to enjoy a steak dinner‚ complete with entertainment‚ while they fellowship with each other. Maureen Krebs, a CNB rancher from Oregon‚ coordinated the first event. CNB retail partners Whole Foods Markets‚ New Seasons Markets‚ PCC Markets‚ Burgerville Restaurants and Town & Country Markets contributed either foods for the gathering‚ or the people to help serve. In addition‚ CNB production partner AB Foods make contributions to the event. Dan Probert‚ Executive Director for CNB, cooked for the December event. “Serving these military families is one of the most humbling experiences I’ve ever had‚” he said. “it’s one I’ll never forget”. The most recent event was held in June and was hosted by the Washington Cattlemen’s Association in Lacey‚ Washington. More than 250 Army soldiers and their families received the complimentary meal; they were deployed to Afghanistan a few weeks later. “We’ll be gone for a year‚” said Lt. Col. John Voorhees‚ commanding officer of the 504th Military Police Battalion‚ based at Fort Lewis‚ Washington. “These men and women are all volunteers who want to make a difference. Today‚ though‚ we’re all here for one purpose: Nobody's gonna turn down a steak dinner.” Norm Birch‚ who works with the marketing division of CNB‚ said 20 head of cattle provided the 800 or so pounds of 1–inch thick‚ bone–in rib steaks. “This is our way of saying thanks to the men and women who sacrifice so much for our freedom‚” said Birch. “We hope it helped them celebrate a nice day with their friends and families‚ and that they leave for Afghanistan knowing that we support them back home.” Bill Broadie‚ who is a Vietnam veteran and founder of the All–American Beef Battalion‚ puts it this way: “You serve us 365 days a year‚” he told the audience. “We can serve you for one.” Later‚ Broadie commented‚ “It’s great to show your support to these kids‚ having fought in a war myself‚ I know what it’s like to leave your family behind and it’s just heart breaking.” For more information about the AABB, find out details on how to sponsor an event‚ or make a monetary donation‚ you may visit their website at steaksfortroops.com. |
