Nothing like starting off with the good, the bad and the ugly. Really it was for the best. Fall seemed like a blur with all the goings on. Green chopping, haying, opening the feedlot, sending two truckloads of steers to Beef Northwest and now starting the branding. I guess we are now into late winter, see I told you it seems like a blur.
We did get started today on branding the calves. We freeze brand because it really shows up. This ranch runs on public lands with four other ranchers who are not a part of this co-op so branding is the only way we have to know what cattle are ours. The brand we use is over 130 years old, it came from Texas originally. The bar was added to the TF when they reached Idaho. The first branding of the season for us is slow getting going. The ground crew needs to get a rhythm as well as working out the kinks for the ropers. By the second bunch everyone is in rhythm and having a ball. It sure is a social event. The neighbors come to help and we do have fun.
It sure has been muddy around here, which is very unusual. The mountain needs some more snow, although it is muddy. It sure makes keeping the feedlot dry for the calves hard. Our hired man is constantly scrapping the pens to try and keep things clean and dry. What a task.
We have had a contractor come and look at the old farm house where Bob and Ruth lived. It is a 1940’s catalog house with two additions, one in the 60’s and one in the 70’s. No idea what is going on with the plumbing and electrical, not to mention insulation. As it turns out to remodel just the top floor is almost as costly as building a new house. Brian and I really struggled with that thought. But after much soul searching and asking Bob and Ruth for some advice from Heaven, we have decided to build new. So I will try and keep up when we start construction and let you all know how it is going.
The pictures are of a group of buzzards that we saw just a little ways from our cowcamp, one of the neighbors that came and helped with the first branding, Curley the smartest dog in the world;) glad it is branding time again and our son Sean enjoying the day with family and friends.
Talk to ya soon!!!
