First the good, always start with the good right? It has been raining off and on all spring, it did let us get our first cutting of hay in, but other than that lull what a spring. The grass outside on the range looks so good, better than last year. Even though Owyhee County is declared a drought area, which it is, it is a good grass year. If not for some pipe lines and our son’s diligence, the water on the other hand would be a little short. We have moved our cattle on up to the third spring range we have, leaving behind grass and feed the whole way. Even the cows think we are crazy.
The greenchop is done for the winter feedlot and now starts what we consider the ugly. FARMING!!! Being cattle people stopping to farm is really hard for us. We know without the farm we could not be successful ranchers, but that doesn’t make it any easier. This year we are turning over five fields, that is a lot for us to do in one year, but we needed to do them. We are also able to add some farm ground this year.
Now for the bad, I really hate the bad. Our oldest son, who is also mentally and physically disabled already, has a rare form of lymphoma. He started chemo about a week ago and will get chemo every three weeks for eighteen weeks. So far he has had a slight reaction to the treatment the first go around, but did not get very sick at home. This form of lymphoma falls under the Hodgkin’s umbrella, but is not Hodgkin. I don’t really understand it either, but 1 in 1 million get this form, leave it to him. He understands that it is cancer, but also that it is totally curable. So no pity or sympathy going on here, let’s just move forward and we will get through this.
Really moving forward is the goal in life. Whether it be cancer or cows or whatever keep on moving forward.
Talk to you all soon and have a happy spring!!
